ENERGY TRANSITION THEMES
Industry Decarbonisation
Indonesia, as ASEAN’s largest economy, is pursuing its Vision 2045 to become a fully industrialized and environmentally sustainable nation. Industry remains central to economic growth, contributing significantly to GDP, exports, and investment. However, it also accounts for a quarter of national emissions. Targeting a 9 million ton CO₂e reduction in the IPPU sector, Indonesia is encouraging energy-efficient and low-carbon industrial practices, aligned with global climate commitments and mechanisms such as CBAM.
ENERGY TRANSITION THEMES
Island Energy Solutions
With over 17,000 islands and more than 600 isolated electricity grids, Indonesia faces a unique challenge in ensuring universal access to modern energy. Standard fossil-based solutions such as diesel generators are not only costly to operate but also contribute to environmental degradation. Addressing these challenges requires localised and renewable-based innovations that not only meet energy needs but also support economic development, enhance service delivery, and add product value in remote areas.
Indonesia’s wealth of natural resources and past experience in deploying renewable energy (RE) mini-grids offers a strong foundation for island energy solutions. These past initiatives have enabled knowledge sharing and technical exchange, both domestically and with countries facing similar decentralised energy challenges. Renewable energy innovations play a central role in Indonesia’s low-carbon development, particularly in small and remote islands where sustainable, scalable models are essential.
Our Mission
GIZ supports the Government of Indonesia (GoI) in shaping strategies for the implementation of the energy transition in remote/island regions, and to increase exchange through triangular approaches. The beneficiaries are local communities and the entire transformed rural regions.
